How does Acupuncture Increase Fertility?

By Bonnie Lambert, Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, D.Ac.O.M., L.Ac.

Acupuncture can help in so many ways!   By regulating monthly cycles, correcting hormone imbalances, increasing circulation and blood supply to the uterus, stimulating ovaries to produce healthy eggs.  Regular monthly or bi-monthly treatment is important to regulate menstruation so ovulation can be predicted accurately.  If there are fertility issues, such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, elevated FSH, advanced age, failed IVF, recurrent miscarriage or other factors regular treatment will assist in balancing the body.  Treatment is also useful to connect the mind/body to relieve stress and anxiety which is common with couples trying to conceive.

Dr. Bonnie advises couples to download an ovulation predictor app such as FLO or FERDY – with both partners participating in the planning. This will allow you to plan for the fertile window each month.  Understanding and awareness of your bodies changes during ovulation, such as Basal Body Temp changes and Cervical Fluid are key to success.

All the little details matter

A comprehensive and detailed health history will be taken with the goal of understanding each individuals unique situation.  The length of time between cycles, number of days for menses, PMS symptoms, diet, lifestyle, stress levels, male factors are all considered important details and will be taken into account when creating an Acupuncture treatment plan.

Working with Western Medicine

There has been much research and collaboration with practitioners and the use of Acupuncture alongside IVF and other Western fertility therapies.  Studies show improved success rates using Acupuncture for follicle stimulation/receival as well as before and after embryo transfers.

“Unexplained Infertility”

Luckily Eastern Medicine does not use this diagnosis.  Identifying the underlying problem in the body  and working to “restore reproductive functioning” is the key to a healthy pregnancy.

It has been an amazing and joyful journey for me as a practitioner to see couples change their lives and become parents with the use of Acupuncture and Natural medicine.
