James Gilmour

Paediatric Occupational Therapist

James is a highly qualified Occupational Therapist with more than ten years of professional experience. He graduated from Ulster University with First Class Honours in Occupational Therapy and later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Advancing Practice for Occupational Therapy. He is a registered member of the Cayman Islands Council for Professions Allied with Medicine and brings extensive paediatric expertise to Align.

Originally from the Isle of Man, James is well accustomed to island life. Before relocating to the Cayman Islands, he worked within the National Health Service in Northern Ireland as a community paediatric Occupational Therapist. In this role, he supported children from infancy through adolescence with a wide range of developmental and functional needs, including global developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and complex physical and neurological disabilities.

His practice focused on:

• Early intervention

• Functional skill development

• Sensory regulation

• Postural support

• Assistive technology

• Strategies to build independence at home, in school, and in the community

James delivered therapy through both individual and group approaches, running targeted intervention blocks to develop motor, perceptual, play, and learning skills while fostering confidence and participation.

Following his NHS career, James joined Leckey, a leading manufacturer of specialised paediatric postural management equipment. There, he combined clinical practice with product research and development, contributing to the design and refinement of equipment now used internationally to enhance participation, comfort, and functional engagement for children with diverse physical needs. During this time, he also developed a highly effective toileting support programme, created in collaboration with international charities, which has enabled many families to achieve toileting independence more rapidly.

James is passionate about helping children build confidence, independence, and meaningful engagement across all areas of life. His areas of expertise include:

• Early intervention

• Postural management

• Toileting support

• Attention and participation

• Functional daily living skills

• Gross and fine motor development

• Sensory regulation strategies

Now part of the Align team, James is committed to delivering high-quality occupational therapy services to children and families across the Cayman Islands.
