"Unlocking the Mystery of TMJ: Understanding Symptoms, Evaluation, and Treatment"

Do you have “TMJ”?

“TMJ” stands for temporomandibular joint or jaw joint. So, yes, you most likely have two TMJs -one on either side of your face, just in front of your ears! Quite often, you’ll hear dysfunction of these joints being called “TMJ” when issues you may have with your jaw joints are more accurately described as “TMD” or temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder. These conditions can affect your joint, joint capsule, ligaments, tendons and surrounding muscles. Most TMD symptoms are temporary and come and go throughout our lives. They don’t usually require professional care or intervention. But if you have persistent jaw pain or your jaw is locked open/closed, you should see your doctor, dentist, or physiotherapist to discuss possible causes and treatments for your problem.

Some TMD Symptoms:

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw on one or both sides

  • Pain in one or both of your temporomandibular joints

  • Ear pain without infection/fluid

  • Pain with chewing

  • Aching facial pain

  • Locking of the TMJ makes it difficult to open or close your mouth

  • Headaches around your temples

  • Stiffness of your jaw

  • Jaw clicking, grating or popping sound

 Understanding the TMJ:

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a crucial hinge connecting the lower jawbone to the skull, facilitating essential functions like chewing, yawning and speaking. The joint is comprised of the temporal bone of the skull and the mandible, or lower jawbone. It is cushioned by a small, shock-absorbing disc that allows the jaw to move smoothly. TMJ disorders or TMD can result in discomfort, pain, and limited jaw movement, which impacts daily life. Pain can increase with chewing, yawning, talking, etc. If the disc isn’t moving smoothly, there can be clicking, grating or popping sounds heard. Some joint noises are a variant of “normal”, but if the noises correspond with pain, you should seek treatment.
